What makes you feel alive and refreshed?

I did something last Friday that I don’t normally do.   I stopped working at 1:30, tidied up my office/yoga space, got organized for Monday, and took a long walk outside along the Mill River near my house.  It was a gorgeous early-fall day:  the sun was dazzling, dancing off the river; the leaves, not yet turned, provided just the right amount of shade; and the air had that delicious, fall crisp.

It felt so good to walk, to feel the sun and air against my skin, and to look, beyond my computer screen of words and zoom faces, out in the distance at the dogs playing in the river, at the current of the river, lazily flowing, at the prayer flags swaying in the gentle breeze. It reminded me how important it is to:

  • Get up and move.
  • Look far and wide – to use my eye muscles in different ways.
  • Get some fresh air.
  • Change things up in my schedule.
  • Do something for me.

I walk a lot, but it’s usually very purposeful: walk the dog, walk to work, walk to get the mail, run up and down the stairs about 1000 times to get food, to do laundry, to get something I forgot. This was a walk, however, just for me – for my body, for my mental health, for my soul.  I walked fast when I wanted to, slowed down when I wanted to, climbed on rocks and fallen tree trunks, played my own version of "the-ground-is-lava" - stepping on stones and tree roots to challenge my feet, ankles, hips in new ways. I challenged my eyes to see as far as they could see.  I challenged my ears to listen to sounds far away.

I didn’t have my phone as Maddie was with a friend, and I knew she was in good hands.  It was wonderful to be free of technology and just be with myself and the sounds of the birds, the dogs, even the trickle of the river.

By the time I was done, I felt refreshed, alive, infused with the good energy of being outside and moving the way I wanted to move.  For me, movement is at the heart of my feeling my best. While there are definitely other things that feed my soul, moving my body is number one.

I can’t wait to do it again – in fact, I’m putting it in my schedule right now!

What do you do for you and you alone?
What infuses you with good energy and makes you feel alive and refreshed?

Please, email me and let me know – I’m really curious!

Join me for classes - the schedule is here - we'd love to have you!
