wrist modifications in yoga

Oh, the wrists!  We spend a lot of time on our hands and knees in a typical yoga class, which is fine. But if you have sensitive wrists, this can be a doozy.  What do you do when your wrists feel cranky in table top, plank, downward dog, all those familiar staples of yoga, especially in a vinyasa class?

Well, several of my students have asked me for some modifications, so in this video I’ll offer some ideas around modifying, but I’ll also share some ways to warm up, even strengthen the wrists so you can find more comfort and ease when you are bearing weight on your hands.  Generally, our wrists will adapt to bearing more weight over time, especially when we combine mobilization, stretching, and strengthening.

As you play with this practice take your time and be consistent. One of my favorite teachings from the Yoga Sutras reminds us that our practice develops over a long period time with consistency and our full attention.

And in case you are looking for places to purchase some of the items mentioned you can check out the brief resource list below.  It’s by no means exhaustive, but it will give you a little jump-start.  Happy practicing!!
