When I first began my home practice, I really didn’t know what I was doing. I remembered some sequences from classes I had taken, I knew sun salutations, and I had a subscription to Yoga Journal, all of which I used to help me create my home practices. But I really didn’t know why I was doing what I was doing – what I did know was that I was curious to try things and see what would happen. That curiosity served me well and with time led me to thinking about what I needed from my practice rather than just doing the same practice by rote day in and day out. Taking the time to check in helped me to feel more connected to myself and my needs, which in turn helped me to feel more authentic in my choices for my practice.

Asking that simple question, “What do I need today?” can be so enlightening and can shape, not just your yoga practice, but the way you move through your whole day. Maybe you need a walk outside, not an indoor yoga class. Maybe you need a 30-minute Savasana, rather than a 30-minute vinyasa practice. Maybe you need a warm, comforting bowl of soup, rather than a smoothie.

So, take a moment right now and ask yourself: “What do I need today?” And see what happens.
