As you know I love all things yoga.  And, I have a particular interest in the body and movement: how and why the body moves – or in some cases doesn’t – in particular ways.

In our last Bliss Bite we talked a little about the 3 planes of motion: the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes.  Now in all reality, most movements don’t strictly happen in one plane, but more likely in a combination of planes.  But I think it’s interesting, from a movement perspective, to notice what your typical movement patterns look like (e.g.:  if your main form of exercise is running or walking, which is mainly a sagittal plane movement) and where you might want to pepper in other types of movement to keep your muscles and joints more balanced, to improve your proprioception and to even improve your coordination.

This week I wanted to dive in a bit more about the sagittal plane and what moving in that plane might look like.

The sagittal plane divides the body in half right to left.  So, imagine a glass plane sliding down the middle of your body dividing you in half to separate the right side from the left side.  Any movement that happens in this plane happens front (anterior) to back (posterior) or back to front. Walking, reaching for a door handle, lunging, squatting, nodding your head yes are examples of movement in the sagittal plane.

Check out this video for a brief practice focused on moving in the sagittal plane – have fun!

Check out my classes here and let's move together!!
