Most of you know my yoga story,  but the biggest shift I noticed in myself as a result of my yoga practice didn’t happen in the studio. It happened in my own home yoga practice.  Sure, I learned tons about yoga when I went to class – that was invaluable. But, I learned more about me when I was home alone playing on my mat.  There I could pay attention to myself and my experience more fully.

My time on my mat taught me to listen to what I needed in any given moment; it allowed me to notice the subtle shifts in my body, my heart, my energy. When I was exhausted or sick I didn’t have to do downward dog if I didn’t want to – I could do a supported forward bend and savasana, or legs up the wall and leave it at that.

My home practice started with me – what I learned in class, what I learned from Yoga Journal and books, and most importantly what I learned to listen for – my own intuition.

Our home yoga practice doesn’t have to be complicated.

  1. Start by rolling out your mat, a blanket or towel, or even clearing some space on your rug,
  2. Pick 3 poses you enjoy and do them. Play in them.  Breathe in them.
  3. Add Savasana (you won’t regret this!).
  4. Repeat daily.

Some bonus tips for you home-practice-pros:

  • Feel free to change the order of your 3 poses.
  • Explore one new thing each time you get on the mat – like what your feet are doing in each pose, or your hands, or your breath.  This way you have a fresh and focused experience each time.
  • Try 1 new way to get into each pose.  If you always do them separately, could you link them together?
  • If you only have time for one pose  - make it Savasana. The conscious stillness, quiet and rest we cultivate in this pose is soooo important for our nervous system and its resiliency.

Most importantly have fun and enjoy those few, precious and necessary moments you’ll be spending caring for yourself and your well-being.

And if you need help with this, email me. This is my jam!!
