You're Doing Great!

 

How are you doing? What a year so far! It’s hard to believe it’s already fall! I wanted to check in to say hi, see how you were and to remind you that all that you’ve been doing is great and enough! And I also wanted to remind you to be kind and gentle with yourself. I say this, because it’s something that I struggle with daily. I have this very critical and quite honestly, not-so-nice voice in my head that loves to judge me and doubt me and criticize me. And when I feel like I’m trying my best and giving my all, and things still aren’t happening in the way that I had hoped that voice kicks in and starts yammering away.

I hold very dearly the simple teachings from this practice: that of kindness (ahimsa) gentleness and acceptance. And those teachings support me greatly when that voice tries to take over. Pausing, breathing and stepping back to look at the situation I’m in and trying to see it from someone else’s eyes (not mine or my “voice’s”) helps me to see that what I am doing is usually enough and that I am enough. It often helps me reset and move forward in a more gentle and kind way, and often the voice quiets.

It also helps to say to myself a phrase I’ve adopted as a mantra – courtesy of a dear friend of mine: “You’re doing great!”. She’s said this to me on countless occasions: you are doing great being a parent in this pandemic and otherwise; you are doing great as a pet owner to a sick pup; you are doing great with your work and managing it with family responsibilities. Hearing her say that is a real comfort because I know she means it – she sees me through her kind and gentle eyes, not through my critical and harsh ones that always see the cracks and missteps.

This has been a year like no other, and the situation we are all in is just not a normal way for us as humans to live. So please remember to be kind and gentle with yourself; find ways to see yourself through eyes that aren’t judgmental or critical. This situation has demanded so much of us, we needn’t be demanding more. And, if you are feeling like you are slamming into a wall right now or feel like whatever you doing (in life, work, your health, your practice…whatever) isn’t enough, trust that it is and that you are doing great!
