Reiki & Me

 

Recently a friend of mine asked me about Reiki – what it was, how did I get into it, what it was all about… - she didn’t really understand it, and wanted to learn more. You know what, I didn't really get it either, not when I first experienced it. My first Reiki session was a mini-session– about 15-20 minutes long, and I didn’t really feel anything except a feeling of relaxation, which was nice. But I think I was expecting something more or different -maybe something more concrete, like a massage, or some deeper sense of release and openness in my body. What I didn’t realize was that Reiki was working on a deeper level than just my physical body. It was working on something I couldn’t really feel or touch – the energy within me.

As a yoga teacher, I trust that there is this energy within each of us. You can’t touch it like you can touch your thigh or feel it like you can feel a tight hamstring muscle opening, but it’s there. Think about that inner feeling you get when you are around someone who has low energy or draining energy, and you don’t really want to be around them and yet you really can’t pinpoint why; or the converse – that person or group of people you want to be around all the time because they have this positive, enthusiastic or joyful energy – or that their energy just jibes with yours - and when you are around them you seem elevated in some way. That’s the way I think about Reiki and energy work – it’s there, a bit intangible, but you feel its effects deep within you.

Often in my yoga classes I would watch my students come in frazzled and tired and could sense that their energy was “all over the place”. Then we’d sit and breathe together and begin to focus our collective attention on our bodies and breath, and I could absolutely feel the energy shift in the room - it became grounded and settled and focused – like a laser beam. This was not only in my students, but within me too. By the end of class, when folks were in Savasana you could feel an even deeper shift – a softer more relaxed pulsation of energy. The energy within each person and within the room would settle and flow like gentle waves. It was in those moments, watching, feeling, sensing those shifts in energy that led me to Reiki. I wanted to learn more about energy, and I wanted to find other ways to help people experience those shifts.

I took my Level 1 Reiki training really for me – to experiment on myself with this practice to see how it would affect me. And in receiving Reiki from others and from my own self-care practice that evolved, I started to understand it a little bit more. For me, Reiki is subtle, quiet, steady and can feel like nothing, and then it feels like something – this quiet, subtle shift becomes a deep release and a feeling of inner re-organization of my being. And in this re- organization I feel like my thoughts, movements, feelings are running more smoothly, more efficiently. There’s a sense of clarity, space, breath, ease, balance, and grounding all at the same time. In essence, I feel more like me without all the extra stuff that gets in the way of me being me.

An image that comes to mind is that of a small stream blocked with fallen leaves and branches. The stream is there, but it can’t flow because of all the stuff blocking it. But, when you clear it of the leaves and branches the stream becomes more of itself and starts to do its thing – it flows more freely and moves forward along the frame of the banks.

So that is how I experience Reiki. I will say that the longer I explore it, the easier it is to experience those sensations of inner re-organization.And the more I play with it, the longer the effects stay with me.
