Mat Motivation

Yikes – it is really dark in the morning these days! It makes getting out of bed and getting motivated to do anything really difficult. And, if you’re like me, the wee hours of the morning are my yoga time. But with the slight chill in the air and the darkness of night still lingering, in the bed vs yoga mat dual, bed often wins!

Getting on our mats regularly can be challenging any time of day, even though we know we always feel amazing afterward.

Here are a couple of quick tricks that get me rolling out of bed and onto my mat:

  • Having a theme already picked out: like exploring compassion or the meditative aspect of my practice; working on a strength building practice, or one that energizes or calms; a heart-opening or hip-opening practice…you get the gist.
  • Reading Yoga Journal and playing around with some of the sequences they include in an issue.
  • Putting on my favorite, most comfy yoga clothes.
  • Laying my mat down the night before, or quite honestly, leaving it out all the time so I can pop onto it throughout the day.
  • Playing music I love, or lighting a candle, or even burning incense.
  • Picking a poem or quote and letting that guide my practice.
