Let's get movin' & groovin', NOW

How are you holding up?

I know for us, the first week was kind of fun and novel. We had a blast creating our home school, The Nutting School, where you learn. …Nutting. Week 2, however, was a little bit of a sophomore slump – the novelty having worn off. Week 3 we started getting into a groove, but I felt like I had to keep coming up with things to keep it fresh for Maddie to stay engaged. Now, here we are in week 4. I don’t know what this week will be like, but I do know, that with each passing week of being home, each passing week of shifting weather, we are working on getting out of the house more and more and MOVING our bodies more and more.

So that is my offering to you and my hope for you: get up, out of your chair, get away from your computer and phone, and get moving. It could be a walk around your home, or a challenge of how many times you can climb up and down your stairs in one minute, or a 10 minute dance party. Better yet, if you can get outside, get outside - even if it’s just in front of your home. Get outside and enjoy some fresh air and sunlight. If you can take a walk, take a walk.

Moving your body is essential. Moving keeps your joints mobile, your muscles from getting too stiff, and can stimulate the flow of lymph fluid (the lymphatic system helps defend the body from infection) to name a few benefits.

And, here are some things you can do to bring a little more mindfulness into your movements.

  • Notice your breath as you move – how does it change?
  • Notice how your body feels after moving. And notice your mood after moving.
  • If you go for a walk outside, look for signs of spring: notice what you see around you, what you hear, what you smell. You can keep a written log or make a mental note – the point is to just notice. Not only will you get your body moving and your blood flowing, but you will also bring yourself more into the reality of the present moment, which when you look around, despite this challenging and worrisome time, is really quite beautiful.

Stay well, dear friend, and I will look forward to seeing you soon!
