Chakra 1:  Getting Grounded

It’s hard to believe we are already into February. 2015, while still new, seems to be going fast. As we begin a new year, it can be really exciting to have 12 months out in front of us, full of possibility. But it can also be really scary and daunting to have 12 months out in front of us, waiting for us to create something wonderful with.

I find during this time that it’s really important to get grounded and rooted so that as we move forward, we can do so from a place of clarity, stability and security. Working with our breath and our body can help clear the mind and give us a solid place to plan our next move from.

Given that, I think working with the chakras - the energy systems in the body – is a great place to begin. The first chakra, Muladhara, or root chakra is the chakra that governs our feelings of security, stability, groundedness. It runs from the soles of our feet to the base of our spines. It can easily get out of balance when we experience lots of change or are in the middle of a transition. I know when we were in the midst of moving to Massachusetts, I felt very scattered mentally, and physically unstable. It’s no wonder, given the fact that we moved to a town where we didn’t know anyone, I had no work to anchor me, all of our belongings were packed up in boxes, and it was the middle of fall, one of the more unsettling seasons.

In the following sequence, we’ll explore simple breathing practices as well as asana explorations to help awaken and rebalance the first chakra so that we can move ahead on this year’s journey with clarity and purpose!
